SRI LANKA - SAN MARINO

Relations

BILATERAL RELATIONS

Sri Lanka and San Marino have been enjoying close cooperation at multilateral fora, particularly in the UN and specialized agencies for several decades. The two countries continue to explore avenues to further strengthen our bilateral relations in areas of mutually beneficial cooperation.

The first official meeting between the two Foreign Ministers of Sri Lanka and San Marino took place in 2012 together with the signing of the agreement on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations, the two countries have been enjoying close cooperation at multilateral fora, particularly in the UN and specialized agencies for several decades.

BILATERAL TRADE BETWEEN SRI LANKA AND SAN MARINO

San Marino's economy is centred on tourism, banking, and the manufacture and export of ceramics, clothing, fabric, furniture, paints, spirits, tiles, and wine. The manufacturing and financial sectors account for more than half of San Marino's GDP. The per capita level of output and standard of living are comparable to those of the most prosperous regions of Italy.

Although bilateral trade needs to be further diversified and expanded, Sri Lanka has exported apparel to San Marino and chemical products are among the imports from the country.

San Marino has 33,000 inhabitants (2016), but it receives on average around 75,000 tourists a year (2014).  As tourism is a major source of income for both Sri Lanka and San Marino, there is potential for cooperation in the tourism sector.
